How to Submit:

Since its founding in the Department of Anthropology at UC Berkeley in 1949, the Kroeber Anthropological Society (K.A.S.) has published both general and specially edited journals. Papers will be accepted with the understanding that their content has been not published elsewhere. If any part of a paper has been already published, or is to be published elsewhere, the author must include this information at the time of submission.

Please submit papers electronically by email to: kas@berkeley.edu

Applicants must first submit a 300-word abstract. A separate title page should provide the author's name, institution/title, address, and contact information. You will be notified if your abstract has been accepted and will be asked to send your final paper, abstract and biographic sketch by June 14, 2013.

Final Paper:
Should not exceed 8,000 words (excluding abstract and references) in Word or other standard format (double-spaced, 12 point standard font, 1”/1.25” margins). A 100-word biographic sketch should accompany the final paper submission. Any papers still requiring significant editing will not be considered for publication. Papers submitted after these deadlines cannot be guaranteed publication in the upcoming issue.

Language of submission is English.

Please use parenthetical citations and endnotes. For all other style questions, including bibliography norms, manuscripts should conform to the guidelines used by the American Anthropological Association (590Kb pdf file, requires Adobe Acrobat Reader). For any rules not discussed in the AAA style guide, please refer to the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

Please do not use Endnote or other referencing software programs. If including photos, please send them separately from the manuscript (high resolution, tiff or jpg). Each photo should include a caption and credit. Authors who wish to reprint images, charts, or graphs that have been previously published should contact the original publisher for permission.

Authors should submit an electronic copy of the manuscript to kas@berkeley.edu. If not in digital format, paper copies may be sent to:

Review Process:

Contributors will be informed as soon as possible whether their submission has been accepted, requires revision and reconsideration, or has been rejected. We strive to review every submission in a thorough and timely manner. However, due to the high volume of submissions we receive and the need to read each article carefully, this process may take some time. If you have submitted a paper and have received other offers, please contact us at kas@berkeley.edu and we will try to expedite your review. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your submission.

Kroeber Anthropological Society Journal
Language and Communication - Double Issue 104/105

Submission are now open for our upcoming double issue of KAS Papers.

Issue 104 will be a themed issue on the role of language and communication in Anthropology. Language and discourse breech the bounds of anthropological sub-disciplines, and we welcome papers that do the same. Language and discourse, semiotics and logic: these concepts present abundant opportunities for creative, and cross-cutting analyses of many topics, including but not limited to health and therapy, coercive force and political process, community formation and migration.

We ask you see beyond divides in the discipline, and we seek papers that take seriously the opportunities of language and communication inquiries transcend sub-disciplinary boundaries. We welcome papers from both inside and outside of anthropology that have not been published, nor are being considered for publication elsewhere.

Issue 105 will constitute a general issue of our journal, and we invite submissions from across the subdisciplines of sociocultural, biological, archaeological, medical, and linguistic anthropology.

Submissions for both Issues 104 and 105 should send a 300-word abstract to
kas@berkeley.edu no later than Friday, May 31, 2013.
